Newspaper Rock State Park lies on Utah 211, the entrance road to the Needles Section of Canyonlands National Park about 12 miles from US 191, south of Moab.

These petroglyphs, carved into the dark background of desert varnish on the rock surface , range in age from 1,500 years to the last few hundred years. Newspaper Rock is sheltered from the weather by a large lip of rock that projects outward above it.
